Santo Patrono “Altiplano”, the most exported wine in Bolivia.

The Santo Patrono line of Bodegas y Viñedos Kuhlmann presents its flagship export wine ‘Altiplano’ to the local market. It is already on sale in specialized places since the beginning of September 2021.

Santo Patrono “Altiplano” is a high quality wine that until this moment was only available in Europe and Asia , being the most exported wine from Bolivia, is now available to consumers, in specialized stores and in certain restaurants and supermarkets.

Although Santo Patrono “Altiplano” is a young brand, it was born with a great projection towards export markets. Designed to encapsulate the identity of our country, it is the only wine made with the two best red grape varieties that adapt to high altitude: Marselan and Tannat. As of 2019, it will be marketed in the United Kingdom, from where it will be distributed throughout the European continent. Likewise, “Altiplano” has arrived in Japan, with plans to disembark in China and the USA.

“During the first year, the winery did not have sufficient production capacity to supply the domestic market, since everything produced was destined for export. However, the resounding success of the wine internationally, led us to increase the volume to be able to offer “Altiplano” in its country of origin,” said Franz Molina, general manager and winemaker of the winery.

A special wine Santo Patrono “Altiplano”, Bolivia’s most exported wine, has an elegant yet complex character. Black-purple in color, this lush wine is made from Marselan and Tannat, the two most important red grape varieties in the south of the country that grow at an average altitude of 2000 meters above sea level.

“It is a wine packed with intense juicy fruit, especially black cherries, complemented by attractive French oak. Its tannins are pleasantly soft and its finish silky and long. Another surprising characteristic is the polyphenolic concentration it contains; possibly the most concentrated wine in Latin America,” said Molina.

Viñedos Kuhlmann is known for being the winery that carries out the most research and product innovation in Bolivia. In the case of “Altiplano”, it worked closely with wine experts from England to achieve an exceptional wine. This led to it being listed as the wine of the month for May by The Sunday Times newspaper and later receiving a rating of 90 points out of 100 from Decanter magazine, in the category of premium wines.

“We are very confident that it will be very well accepted and that something similar to what happened in Europe can happen. The first year we shipped the product was sold out in only 3 months and the second year it sold out in only 2 months. Santo Patrono ‘Altiplano’ demonstrates all that companies committed to development can achieve, putting Bolivia’s name on high”, concluded the executive with optimism.

But beyond its first-class production, Kuhlmann aims to be a company committed to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the environment, presenting itself as the only winery that has waste treatment in Bolivia. It has also demonstrated a strong commitment to national development, with a 100% Bolivian investment that prioritizes the purchase of products, services and national labor.

It was founded in 1930 by the Kuhlmann family and is located in the town of San Luis, its vineyards cover 20 hectares and it has a capacity of 600,000 liters per year. The Chamber of Senators highlighted the contributions made by Bodega Kuhlmann y Cia. Ltda. made to the development of the Bolivian wine industry in its 85 years of “work, tradition, experience and quality”. This legislative body also recognized the merits obtained by this company in international competitions “carrying the name of Bolivia on high”.
